Anna and Judi, Umatie's co-founders, are women (and mommies) on a mission! From humble beginnings in a home kitchen, to the Umatie Factory (which still contains the essence of homemade love), this incredible baby foodie brand really have made a name for themselves!
We chatted to Anna about all things crockery, cute and wonderfully UMATIE! -
You think you’re obsessed? LOL! I’m absolutely obsessed with crockery – always been and always will be! Since a very young age, I have been fascinated with crockery and started collecting Dutch artist, Fiep Westendorp’s range at the age of 18! My parents thought I wanted to get married and started collecting “trousseau”! When my sister and I started Umatie 7.5 years ago, our own crockery range was already on the “Wish List”.
Yes they are! Finally, we can tick off the wish list but would still like to add a few other pieces later on… so watch this space! For the launch, we started with pieces that could be used every day. The size of the bowls and plate is functional and age appropriate with the amount of foodies a littlie will enjoy at a time. And a lovely keepsake plus the white and black can fit into every household.
When we started Umatie back in 2012, the little characters were already part of our initial look and feel and some of the leafy elements used with our foodie shots on our website. The actual characters we kept for when we launched our product section. So when we launched our Lovely Local Products section, some of those little characters already made their appearance. And now with our crockery range, they can truly come to life!
4. Tell us a bit about the design / functionality behind these creations?
When I was 4 years of age, I had my own little crockery set (still have it!) and loved the images inside the bowl. I made up different dreamy stories whilst eating my foodies and HAD to finish everything in order for my story to end well! I can still remember how I sat in my chair and carried on with my story telling long after my plate was finished.
With our Umatie crockery range, I wanted to keep the images simple and leave the rest to the imagination of the new “little story teller” using the crockery. For example – Daddy and Mommy Hedgehog are outside the mug looking for their little hedgehog who went looking for fruit and leaves to roll in - and can only be found if you finish your drink – inside the mug! The characters are all sleeping and have the same dreamy hearts to show they are loved and happy.
5. We’re moving into Festive Season – such a wonderful but busy time of the year. What’s your advice for parents feedings little ones on-the-go?
Buy lots of healthy snacks and treats in one go. Then split them into little travelling parcels/packs of say 3-4 items plus fresh fruits. Do the packs differently with different combos for each. You can even put them in a fun paper bag with a little trinket/gift to keep them happy while driving, for example. Doing it like this will maybe take you an hour or two but will be so much better than stopping everywhere and ending up only buying crisps!
6. Picnics are plentiful on Umatie’s platforms this month, what picnic style snacks do you suggest parents remember to pack for kiddies?
Mini snacks that they can easily hold in their little hands when they run around. Not a big chunkie wrap… they will drop it for sure and keep running! My suggestion would be to take cardboard cupcake holders and fit a few pieces of fruit in there, or nuts, mini meatballs, pieces of cheese and crudités. Always have a bowl of something healthy too, like a pasta meal, so when they finally sit down for a break they can gobble down a balanced meal!
7. It’s HOT outside already, and we’re only just moving into summer! How much water should little ones be drinking to keep hydrated?
Have a few small bottles of water cold and at the ready. A litre per day should be a good average amount but never less than 500ml. Little ones all drink liquid differently – my children never drank too much at a time, so I topped it up more regularly during the day.
